A disgraced solicitor who cheated his elderly mother out of money needed to fund her care deserves every day of his two-year prison sentence, top judges have ruled. Second mistrial declared in sex assault case of nursing home worker
For a second time in less than a year, a U.S. Secret Service agent's testimony caused a mistrial in the sexual assault case of a Woodstock man accused of inappropriately touching a 93-year-old woman whom he cared for in 2011 in a Crystal Lake nursing home. The mention of a polygraph machine during testimony by agent Aaron Glass led to the mistrial being declared in the case of Angelo Bird, 26. McHenry County Judge Michael Feetterer had issued a pretrial ruling that references to polygraph testing would not be allowed in the trial.

P1.2B released for senior citizens' pension
THE Aquino administration has released P1.2 billion to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for the social pension of 200,000 indigent senior citizens, the Department of Budget and Management said Tuesday. Under Section 5 of Republic Act 9994 , elderly indigents can receive additional government assistance in the form of the Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens, which amounts to a monthly stipend of P500.
Police recommend nursing home develops suspicious death protocol
Police have recommended that a nursing home develop protocols for dealing with suspicious deaths after the killing of an elderly dementia sufferer in 2012. The second day of an inquest into the death of Charles McCulloch, 94, heard that police gathered enough evidence to charge another male resident with murder, but prosecutors decided it was not in the public interest, given the suspect's severe dementia.

Audit: Louisiana has long wait list for Medicaid services
A state audit finds Louisiana's elderly and developmentally disabled wait longer than people in other states to get community-based services through Medicaid. As of October 2014, the auditor's report released Monday says 54,677 people remained on lists for the various Medicaid programs with wait times ranging from two-and-a-half to ten years.

A U.S. government test program with doctors and hospitals slowed healthcare spending in Medicare coverage for the elderly and disabled by hundreds of millions of dollars in 2012 and 2013 but savings were less in the second year, a study released Monday said.
